Winnifred Gilraine Dancers, 1920

The ballerina Winnifred Gilraine led a groundbreaking modern dance troupe that performed in numerous vaudeville revues in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Her troupe’s critically acclaimed performances include “On With the Dance,” “The Whirl of the Dance,” and “The Back to Nature Ballet.” In this promotional photograph, the dancers are fancifully posed.
