Travelers in India, 1890
This photograph depicts travelers, probably British, riding an elephant in Jeypore, India. This image was taken during the British colonial rule of India, the Raj, which lasted from 1858 to 1947. The mahout (elephant driver) and three other handlers and guides accompany the party. Swirls of paint around the head honor the elephant.
