The Art of George Hurrell, c. 1935
George Hurrell (1904-1992) was an American photographer best known for his portraits of Hollywood movie stars during the Golden Age. As the head of MGM studios photography department, his keen eye for lighting and artful posing enhanced the glamour associated with Hollywood during the 1930s. His black and white portraits, arranged with sophistication, portray an unforgettable and iconic elegance. He revolutionized Hollywood portraiture between 1925 and 1950 through his expertise at creating and capturing the mystique, allure, and celebrity of his subjects and is credited with creating the standard for the idealized Hollywood glamour portrait. In 1936, Esquire magazine stated that "a Hurrell portrait is to a normal publicity still what a Rolls Royce is to a pair of roller skates.” Hurrell photographs are a quintessential record of Hollywood glamour and elegance during its Golden Age.
