Laminusa Island Children, Wallace Litwin, c. 1965
This captivating photograph of Moro children was taken on Laminusa Island in the Sulu Archipelago, a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean in the southwestern Philippines. The Bangsamoro ‘Moro’ people are the native Muslim inhabitants of the Philippines and are descendants of the early Malay, Arab, and Indian migrants into the Philippine archipelago from as early as the 14th century. The Moro people formed their own ethnic group in southwestern Mindanao, Sulu islands, and Palawan. The photograph is part of a series that was published in Life Magazine.
Wallace Litwin was a well-known photojournalist of his time. He photographed numerous notables, places, and events. His photographs and photo essays were published in Life Magazine, Town & Country, Esquire, and others. He also famously documented the UFO that appeared to be following the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier in September 1952. The Irgun hired Litwin to document the MS Ben Hecht, a Palestinian blockade runner, in 1947.
