Handcart, Paris, Press Photo, 1940

Press photograph taken on August 10th, 1940 just three months after the Nazi occupation of France. It illustrates the changes in the city and the new way of life for the Parisians.

on back: STRANGE VEHICLES APPEAR ON PARIS STREETS - Because of the shortage of gasoline a variety of vehicles are now appearing on Paris streets. Bicycles are at a premium and handcarts such as this are a familiar sight these days.

This press photograph is overpainted for publication in a newspaper. From the 1890s until the digital era, newspapers enhanced photographs by outlining and overpainting, often resulting in unique multi-media artworks. While this photograph may have been reproduced in hundreds of newspapers, and there may be other copies of the original press print, this is the only one overpainted and used for publication.
