Card photograph of George Lane Taneyhill, MD (1840–1919), who served as the Surgeon General of the Grand Army of the Republic, and his GAR calling card. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), founded in 1866, was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, the Union Navy, and the Marines who served in the American Civil War.
 
Taneyhill served as a surgeon in the 11th Regiment, Co. S, Maryland Infantry.
