Albert Memorial, London, Photochrom, c. 1895
Queen Victoria commissioned the Albert Memorial in tribute to her beloved husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed it in the Gothic Revival style. It is one of the most spectacular landmarks in London and sits directly north of the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington Gardens.
The Photochrom process was half photography and half an early form of printing, producing vivid color photographs around 50 years before color photography was generally available. The photographer made detailed notes on the scene's colors, then hand-painted the negative before transferring the image through colored gels onto the printing plates.
